Zhangjiajie
A sandstone forest in northwest Hunan. The national park and Tianmen Mountain are different trips.
People say Zhangjiajie and mean Wulingyuan, the park of quartzite pillars north of the city. Trails and cable cars move you between Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, and the valley floors. Fog sits in the pillars most afternoons.
Tianmen Mountain is a separate peak on the south side of the city, with its own road and its own cable. It does not combine with the national park in one day.
The city is the place to sleep and change buses. The scenery starts once you are inside Wulingyuan.
