Guilin
A river city in the karst, used as the base for the Li River and for Yangshuo downstream.
The landscape is the point of Guilin, and most of it is outside the city grid. Limestone hills stand in the river fog. The city itself is where you sleep and change buses.
Elephant Trunk Hill is the one famous rock inside town. The Li River boats leave for Yangshuo from the wharf south of the center, and that trip is a separate day. Two Rivers and Four Lakes is an evening loop if you are not on the water already.
Do not try to see the hills from a downtown street and call it done. The views that matter need the river or a viewpoint on the edge of town.
